Around 6 p.m., RPD said a third person had also been shot in connection with the incident. That person was also expected to recover.
The shooting call drew a massive law enforcement response to the north Raleigh mall. Raleigh Police said two groups at the mall got into a verbal altercation that escalated.
"Witnesses reported that two small groups had met up at that location, exchanged words," said Raleigh Police Lt. David Davis. "Those words became physical, and then a shooting occurred. Following the shooting, several individuals had fled the store on foot."
The gunshots sent people running for cover.
"We heard it, like, 10 more shots. So we, we knew it was gunshots then," one mall employee said.
Police said the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. near the Express store.
2 men shot at Triangle Town Center
"It just sounded like, you know, pop pop, pop pop. And we just, we knew right away what it was," one couple told ABC11. "So we just grabbed everybody, went to the back. There was a bathroom, closed the bathroom door, and then stayed in there. I called 911."
Chopper 11 was over the scene and saw at least one person taken out of the mall on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance.
Witnesses who hid in a bathroom told ABC11 that they heard six or seven shots.
There is no suspect information yet, RPD said, but officers with a K-9 were searching near a retention pond in a wooded area by the nearby Hilton Garden Inn, as well as other areas. Police also deployed a drone as the search extended into a neighborhood next to apartments where children were coming home from school.
Juliet Munoz lives in the complex across from the mall. She said she was scared and unsure of what was going on as police fanned out across her neighborhood.
"This all happened as the kids came home, so we were all worried at first because we didn't know what was happening," she said. "The alert on our phone told us we were in danger, but I was really worried for the kids outside."
Police said they recovered a weapon at the mall.
Officers were working to determine whether a person who went to Duke Raleigh Hospital to seek treatment was connected to the mall shooting. Later, two people were walked out of the hospital in handcuffs, but RPD said only that they "caused a disturbance at the hospital."
There is no continuing threat to the public, police said.
"I'm very shook up because I wasn't expecting this, you know, here. But, but things happen everywhere," a couple told ABC11. "But, very shaken up because I have my grandson with me."
Officers worked to clear the mall and the surrounding property. Just after 8:45 p.m., RPD said officers were still at the scene, but that people can now access the mall and retrieve their cars.
RPD said that the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services completed processing for evidence at Triangle Town Center around 10 p.m., and detectives have released the scene.
The shooting came a week after shots were fired at Triangle Town Center. In that case, no one was injured, but two people were later arrested after they crashed into a utility pole in Wake Forest.
