Springfield Middle School students return to newly-built classrooms after tornado

WILSON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- More than a year after a tornado tore through Springfield Middle School in Wilson County, class is finally back in session.

The storm destroyed the sixth and seventh grade wings and now students and staff will return to their newly-built classrooms.

ABC11 got an early inside look at the halls last week that were rebuilt.

The school was damaged when an EF-3 tornado hit the area last year.

They had to be completely rebuilt and during that time classrooms were held in different places.

The reconstruction is way ahead of schedule and the teachers and school leaders say it's all thanks to the support of people from the community.

"Every single person and everyone in the school system, all of our partners, everybody that was a part of this, had a part to play in it. And the key to it was being able to assess what had happened, identify what we need to do next, and then put that plan into action," Dr. Ben Williams said, who is the Wilson County assistant superintendent.

Students returned to the classroom at 7:30 this morning.
