Among the area's top races are the battles for Durham Mayor, Cary Town Council District D, Fayetteville Mayor, Chapel Hill Mayor and Rocky Mount Mayor.

Durham

Durham voters overwhelmingly selected Leonardo "Leo" Williams to be the next mayor. He defeated State Sen. Mike Woodard with 64% of the votes cast.

Williams, who is an entrepreneur, former teacher and City Councilor for Ward 3 said voters are looking for something new.

"People are hungry. They're hungry for, you know, just functionality. I think that was the biggest thing. Crime, affordable housing, transportation, and all those policy points, and issues in our community are present," Williams said. "But for the most part, what folks really are looking for is can we have an embracing culture."

For Durham City Council, Nate Baker, Javiera Caballero and Carl Rist will be the newest members to fill the three open seats. Incumbent Monique Holsey-Hyman has been voted out of her seat.

Colvin appears to be on his way to victory with 90% of precincts reporting.

Rocky Mount

The next Mayor of Rocky Mount is Sandy Roberson. He received more than 1,000 votes more than Theresa Alston Stokes to win the election

Cary

The run-off election in Cary for the District D Town Council seat remains too close to call.

The race is separated by fewer than 70 votes after Tuesday's precincts reported their count. However, both camps said they believe there are hundreds of absentee ballots that remain uncounted as of Tuesday night.
