Heatwave tests power grids, sporadic power outages reported, Duke Energy confirms

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Duke Energy says overall, the electric grid is performing well with the extreme heat, but there have been sporadic outages in some neighborhoods.

ABC11 News found grid workers out ensuring customers stay online.

Duke Energy Spokesperson Jeff Brooks says the weather has not caused a widespread outage, and self-healing technology, which can reroute power, has helped.

There's also staff working around the clock to keep the system running.

"Like any machine, it has millions of parts and it's always possible that you could have an isolated power outage from an equipment failing," said Duke Energy Spokesperson Jeff Brooks. "Our crews are really on alert, just like they would be during a storm to respond quickly when we see any types of outages, recognizing how hot it is, recognizing that we know that it's inconvenient."

Raleigh resident Gordon Toon has been concerned about the grid during this time and is doing his part to put less pressure on the system.

"We've definitely kept it a couple of degrees higher than years past as a way to try and control for it," said Toon. "I've been a stickler for that even before these heat waves."

Brooks is warning that electric bills could soar from usage this week and he is offering several suggestions to keep bills as low as possible.

"This is the week to make a difference on your bill. If you're going to do any savings, this is the time to do it because your air conditioner uses about 50% or more of your electric use every month this time of year," he said. "If you can bump that thermostat up a few degrees, close the blinds on the sunny side of the house and think about using your ceiling fan a little more, that can actually help you to maintain comfort while allowing you to use less electricity."
