NC State student leads march for DACA immigrants

Demonstrators marched and chanted Sunday in solidarity with North Carolina's DREAMERS, immigrants seeking permanent citizenship.

Many in the crowd marching from Nash Square in downtown Raleigh, were undocumented immigrants who came out of the shadows through President Obama's 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA.

President Trump will end the program officially on March 5, 2018.

NC State sophomore Jasmine Wang were among those who organized Sunday's rally so the DREAMERS feel supported in their quest to become Americans.

"I think it's very important that we do keep America diverse because as a country we can succeed better that way," says Wang.

The march ended in Halifax Mall, where DREAMERS shared their personal stories.

College graduate and school teacher, America Moreno-Jimenez, told the crowd she was born in Mexico but has called the Tarheel State home for more than 20 years.

"Our parents are not to blame," Moreno-Jimenez said. "They are not at fault for wanting a bright and prosperous future for their children."

A future they say Congress should protect. Until that happens, organizers say their message to North Carolina's DREAMERS is they are not alone.
