Some protest as new UNC system president takes over
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Some students and faculty at UNC schools statewide walked out of their classes Tuesday in protest as Margaret Spellings officially took over as UNC system president.
Among other things, they accused her of homophobia, insensitivity to students who have amassed debt while trying to get their education - they based that in part on her role as education secretary under President George W. Bush.

However, some did not agree with the position of those who were protesting on the steps of the Wilson Library.
"She hasn't really been in a position like this at Carolina," said UNC- Chapel Hill Junior John Taylor. "We don't know how she's going to act, how she's going to perform. She is going to be here whether we like it or not, so we need to give her a fair chance."
"I don't know if it's going to change anything," UNC-Chapel Hill Sophomore Allison Eames said. "I certainly hope it does, and I hope that Margaret Spellings listens to the feedback of the universities that she's supposed to be governing."
There were similar protests in Charlotte, Wilmington, Greensboro and Boone Tuesday morning.
