RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A little scattered rain didn't do much to dampen Raleigh's huge Independence Day celebration Saturday as the city pulled out all the stops for "The 'Works" on Fayetteville Street presented by Liberty Mutual.
Tens of thousands turned out for the event featuring 18 bands playing throughout the day.
Some 75 downtown restaurants and food vendors also lined the street with all kinds of temptations for the taste buds including pizza, ribbon fries, cheesesteaks, funnel cake, and fried Oreos.
"Just the environment and the food man - love the food love it," said attendee Chris Van Name.
"I will eat until the money runs out," offered Vernon Dunlap.
For those with a competitive spirit, there was Tasty 8's hot dog eating contest, an ice cream eating contest, and a watermelon seed spitting contest.
A kids zone featured bounces/slides and face painting.
"I normally work on the holidays so this is all great for me. I'm loving it," said attendee Royal Jones.
Fayetteville Street was also packed with arts vendors, street performers, GOUGE wrestling, and a stunt show from King BMX.
The evening culminated with twin fireworks displays over Fayetteville Street and the Red Hat Amphitheater.
"Fireworks, I mean what's more American than that? Fireworks are amazing," said attendee Lashanda Jones.
Music for the pyrotechnics was provided by the popular Army Ground Forces Band.
The night wrapped up with a Barenaked Ladies concert at Red Hat Amphitheater.
