Apex woman charged under revenge porn law
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- An Apex woman has been arrested for allegedly breaking North Carolina's new "revenge porn" law.
Ashley Augustine, 20, was booked into the Wake County jail this weekend on a charge of disclosure of private parts.
Augustine could be the first in the Triangle charged under the statute which took effect in December. It makes it illegal to post nude photos of someone online "with the intent to harass, demean, or humiliate."
In the past, sex pictures have been posted online without a subject's permission to get back at someone after a break-up. That's why the law is commonly referred to as the "revenge porn" law.
Usually, it's men who post pictures of women. In this case, however, Augustine is accused of posting a picture of another woman.
When ABC11 went to her home near Apex, her grandfather told us the victim had taken out a restraining order against his granddaughter a week ago.
So, he said Augustine briefly posted a nude picture of the woman on Facebook last month.
But Ron Griffin questions why the person who sent his granddaughter the picture of the victim isn't charged too.
"I think it should be illegal for them to send the pictures on the thing to start with to Ashley's phone, you know. And I think it's probably not right for her to put them on the Internet either, you know. So, I mean, I think there's two wrongs here," he offered.
