CARY, N.C. -- Police in Cary are advising local store clerks to check IDs when selling alcohol on New Year's Eve.
A statement from the city says police officers and high school volunteers will shop a variety of grocery and convenience stores on Dec. 31 to ensure those in Cary are in compliance with the selling of alcohol.
Last year's Operation Blackjack found three of 36 stores selling alcohol to a minor. All but one location checked identification.
Under North Carolina Law, the person selling or giving alcohol to a person under 21 is subject to a Class 1 misdemeanor. Penalties include a mandatory fine of $250, mandatory court appearance, and 25 hours of community service.
