CARY, NC (WTVD) -- Nearly two dozen people were forced out of their apartment homes because of a fire on Wednesday night. Now, firefighters are working to determine the cause.
Neighbor Surya Bhattarai described to ABC11 the scene that played out Wednesday night off Creekwatch Lane in Cary.
"We saw a little flame on the outside," Bhattarai said. "Like a little light from the fire. That's when we ran from the building. We called 911."
Firefighters evacuated all 12 units at the Watercrest apartment complex. Thursday, crews were focused on the left-front side of the building.
It's unclear what caused the blaze. Twenty people are still not allowed back inside their homes.
Bhattarai said his wife suffered minor injuries after she twisted her knee trying to get away from the blaze. Bhattarai told ABC11 his wife was breastfeeding just moments before the escape. He said she is doing OK.
"Right now, she is feeling good. Last night we went to the WakeMed. Right now her leg is OK. We're wondering how this happened," Bhattarai shared.
Investigators are searching for clues.
