Firefighters battle intense car fire in Johnston County

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Firefighters in Johnston County faced an uphill battle trying to stop the intense flames scorching a car on the highway.

It happened early Sunday morning on U.S. 70 about two miles east of Smithfield.

Our crew on the scene said the highway was shut down overnight while firefighters sprayed water on the flames.

Details surrounding the fire have not been released. It it not yet known if the driver or anyone else was hurt.
