'It's time:' Cumberland Co. sheriff plans to step down
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler has a simple reason for stepping down as the county's top lawman.
"It's time."
He will make the official announcement Thursday morning.
On Wednesday, ABC11 sat down with the sheriff in the same office he took over 22 years ago.
A former teacher, professional football player and probation officer, Butler said his proudest achievement is seeing the office, and his deputies, become among the most professional in the state.
At 79, Butler said he feels fine, and his health is good. He plans to work until Dec. 31. His chief deputy, Ennis Wright will take over Jan. 1.
The next sheriff's election is about 19 months away. A number of people in and out of law enforcement have already expressed informal interest in running for the office.
