KENLY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Kenly firefighter died from a heart attack after helping at a wreck Saturday evening.

John Morris Davis Jr. responded to the accident just after 7 p.m. on Princeton Kenly Road where a vehicle flipped over and crashed into a pole.

"I seen the front end of the guys truck come flying into the yard, and he went sideways across the yard until he ran slap into the pole over there," said eyewitness Donald Gulick.

Crews had to work for some time to get the man out of the overturned vehicle.

Officials say Davis experienced chest pains and was taken to the hospital where he later died.

"He loved this department. He loved what he did. And he gave his life to help someone else," said Tim Little with the Kenly Fire Department.

Flags at the department's headquarters were lowered Sunday in Davis's honor. His uniform is on display to recognize his 10 years of service to the community.

Davis is survived by his wife and three children.

"He gave to his community every day, and he responded to many calls, day or night" Little said. "Anything he was asked to do, he did it for the community."
