Makeshift memorial honors UNC research professor
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- A makeshift memorial marks the spot where UNC Research Professor Feng Liu was killed.
The 59-year-old was hit in the head with a landscaping stone and robbed during a walk near campus. Days later, friends, colleagues and complete strangers continue to stop by, including J.B. Hu, a former UNC faculty member, who came to pay his respects.
Much like us, he remarked on what a quiet, peaceful neighborhood this seemed to be.
"It could happen to anyone, it really could happen to anyone," said Hu.
Like many others have already expressed, Hu said it was such a senseless crime, committed against an innocent man out for a mid-day walk in broad daylight. And that's what has Hu and others calling for authorities to do something.
"The city and also the university have to be aware of this and try to protect its faculty and the staff and the students," said Hu.
But can anything be done to prevent such random acts of violence? Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt attempted to address that in an interview published in the News and Observer.
In the paper he's quoted as saying, "I don't know what that answer is, but whatever the answer is, it's going to require the town and university working together."
ABC11 was unable to reach Mayor Kleinscmidt for further comment, but the N&O is reporting he plans to meet with UNC's chancellor early next week.
