Murder charges officially filed in killing of Granville County couple
OXFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Granville County Sheriff's Office has officially filed first-degree murder charges against 54-year-old Edward Campbell and his 21-year-old son Eric in the deaths of 73-year-old Jerome Faulkner and his wife Dora at their home on New Year's Day.
The Campbells are accused of bursting into the couple's home near Oak Hill, N.C. and killing them and setting the house on fire.
The father and son are also charged with burglary, larceny of a motor vehicle, identity theft, financial card theft, arson, and cruelty to animals - for allegedly killing the couple's two dogs.
The couple's bodies were found under a mattress in the back of their own pickup truck after the Campbells allegedly got into a shootout with West Virginia police who stopped them for a stolen tag.
The Campbells face additional charges in West Virginia related to the shootout.
Granville County District Attorney Michael Waters said he was working with federal and West Virginia officials "to ensure the Campbells return to Granville County to face these charges."
The case will be presented to a grand jury later this month.
Asked about a possible motive for the killings Friday, Granville County Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins Jr. told ABC11 that the alleged killers picked the Faulkners at random.
