WAREHAM, Mass. -- A former editor of the Boston Herald has returned home after being attacked by a shark off Ocracoke, North Carolina, earlier this month.

Andrew Costello said in a statement Monday he remains "focused on my long road of recovery."

Costello thanked his family, friends and the staff at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina, "for their love, support and excellent care."

The hospital's head of trauma and acute care surgery, Eric Toschlog, also released a statement praising Costello's courage. Costello said he was discharged on Saturday.

The 67-year-old Costello, who lives in Wareham, was bitten on his ribs, hips, legs and hands as he swam with his adult son July 1 in waist-deep water near a lifeguard stand.

It was one of a rare series of shark attacks off North Carolina earlier this summer.
