DURHAM (WTVD) -- North Carolina Central University Police Chief Timothy Bellamy has been charged with driving while impaired.
WGHP reports Bellamy was driving down Interstate 40 around 12:40 a.m. Saturday
when he was stopped by a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper.
According to records, the trooper smelled alcohol on Bellamy's breath and noticed he had red, glassy eyes. Bellamy blew a .09 on a breathalyzer test.
NCCU said they are aware of the arrest and Bellamy has been suspended with pay in accordance with university policies and procedures.
Bellamy has been the police chief at NCCU since 2012. He retired as Greensboro police chief in 2010.
Bellamy's court date is set for September 4.
