WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Authorities in Wake County are investigating the cause of a house fire that killed a man Monday night.

It happened just before 10 p.m. in the 8400 block of Falcon Crest Circle, which is just west of N.C. Highway 55, between Fuquay-Varina and Angier in the Falcon Crest Subdivision.

When emergency crews arrived, they found 49-year-old Gerald Lyons inside the home and attempted to resuscitate him, but they were not successful.

Neighbor Juan Paul Gonzalez said he and his neighbor tried to get through the door not knowing if anyone was inside.

"We couldn't get in. It was too hot," said Gonzalez. "The smoke was very thick. So we could not breathe well. So we put our t-shirts over [our heads]."

Wake County Sheriff's deputies and the fire marshal are both working to determine the cause of the blaze.
