Police: 2 suspects in Durham chase still on the run

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Duke University was put on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after a police chase ended in a crash right in front of Duke Hospital at Fulton Street and Erwin Road.[br /][br /]Investigators said they have two of the four people involved in custody.[br /][br /]Police said Nicholas Javon Banks, 20, of Durham and Larry Kirkland Jr., 18, of Durham have been charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied residence, felony conspiracy and injury to property.[br /][br /]Banks was also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and Kirkland was also charged with felony hit-and-run.[br /][br /]John Burnett, visiting from New Bern for his son's cancer surgery at Duke, was anxiously watching the action play out from the hospital's third-floor window.[br /][br /]"And this silver car comes flying down here with two cops cars behind it, and he tried to make a turn and crashed into two vehicles," Burnett said. "Then all four doors flew open. Two guys ran in that direction, two guys ran in (a different) direction."[br /][br /]Pictures from Chopper 11 showed a heavy police presence and three crashed cars. An all clear was issued by university officials at 4:03 p.m.[br /][br /][img SRC="http://cdn.abclocal.go.com/content/wtvd/images/cms/automation/images/042716-wtvd-duke-chase-crash-img.jpg[br /]" ALT="" WIDTH="%" ALIGN="left" /][br /][i]The wild scene at the end of the chase.[/i][br /][br /]The Durham Police Department said it all started just before 2:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Dearborn Drive when officers got a report of a shooting.[br /][br /]Police were given a description of a car involved and an officer spotted it on North Roxboro Street near Club Boulevard. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not stop and turned onto Club Boulevard. They chased the car on Club to Hillandale and the driver crashed after it turns into Fulton.[br /][br /]Police said four people were in the car and three got out and ran - triggering the campus alert.[br /][br /]As the hospital and the university were put on lockdown, announcements about a "Code Gray" went out over the PA system. The announcement sparked confusion.[br /][photo ID="1311975" /][br /][br /]"We hear there's a Code Gray lockdown," said Susan Dinger, who was with her son-in-law for his surgery at Duke. "Some of the medical personnel didn't even know what a Code Gray was. I said, 'what is a Code Gray?' I want to know! I was scared, you know.
