RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Authorities in Raleigh say an investigation is underway after a man taken into custody by police died shortly after being detained Monday morning.

Police identified the man as 52-year-old Carl Devince King.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. when officers were called about a report of a disturbance in the 3000 block of Slippery Elm Drive in southeast Raleigh.

A woman told a 911 operator that the man had, "broken into these people's house, kicked the door in ... he just keeps slamming the door ... I don't know if he broke into the house or what he did ma'am ... I'm scared of him, I'm really scared."

The woman was later heard on the call saying, "Don't do that! Calm down! No please! Stop!" To which a man's voice replies, "I can't help it!"

Authorities have not identified the caller. Police have also not disclosed details about the nature of the disturbance.

Police records show over the years they've responded to many calls to King's address. Those calls include suicide threats and assaults. King also has a record that lists 59 arrests.

However, a few of the man's relatives at the scene following the incident told ABC11 that King took medication for high blood pressure, and had no other known health issues.

King was the youngest of nine siblings, and was just baptized two weeks ago. They also said he attended a family reunion last Saturday, and seemed okay at the time.

Meanwhile following departmental protocol, the State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to conduct an investigation of the in-custody death. Raleigh police have said all other applicable departmental policies and practices are being followed.
