The school issued an "Alert Carolina" to warn students of the robberies and sirens were activated. But the school said follow-up notifications were not issued for approximately 45 minutes and the system failed.
"This was pretty serious so I wish that we could have got it a little sooner," said student Kelly Petrarca. "Forty-five minutes isn't enough. It couldn't help you in that amount of time to know. I don't know what's involved to make it take such a long time. I would like to see it improved."
UNC said it's launching a full review to make sure "this breakdown in communication does not happen again. The University apologizes for the concern and uncertainty this caused."
An "all clear" was sounded at approximately midnight.
The armed suspect was described to authorities as a black male, 22-24 years old, and 5'10" and stocky, with a dark complexion and rounder face, a short fade haircut, and wearing a dark tank top. The second suspect was described as a black male, 22-23 years old, around 6' tall with a thin build, also with a dark complexion and short hair. He was wearing a white t-shirt and khaki long pants, authorities said.
