Murder investigation in Johnston County
The Johnston County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that happened early Friday morning.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Johnston County Sheriff's investigators are trying to figure out who shot a man and dumped him on the side of a road early Friday morning.

Authorities said 25-year-old Dorean Teachy, of Dudley, was found beside the road around 12:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of Yelverton Grove Road near Smithfield, which is about a mile east of Interstate 95.

A driver who spotted Teachy and called 911 thought someone had been hit by a car. However, investigators said Teachy had been shot.

Teachy was taken to WakeMed where he later died.

Neighbors said they heard a loud gunshot just after midnight, but they didn't realize a man had been murdered.

"I kind of figured somebody was shot, but I, to find out that somebody actually died, yeah, that bothered me a lot," said Arthea Mullins, who lives nearby the crime scene. "In fact, it worries me now...I really want to know what happened because this is our neighborhood."

Investigators do not think neighbors should be too concerned. The Sheriff's Office does not believe the crime was a random act.
