ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- It looks like North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is finally ready to make his formal declaration that he's running for governor next year.

Cooper's campaign committee said Friday the Democrat is poised to give a "special announcement" Monday evening in his native Nash County.

Cooper has been saying for more than a year he was preparing for a bid for governor. He's been outspoken in criticizing policies of the Republican legislature and GOP Gov. Pat McCrory. During the same period, his office has represented the state defending many of the laws Republicans passed but are now being challenged.

Cooper served in the General Assembly from 1987 through 2000, when he was first elected attorney general.
