Former NFL running back Isaiah Pead is in critical condition after being involved in a single-car accident early Saturday morning in Columbus, Ohio, as first reported by NBC4 in Columbus and confirmed by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Pead underwent surgery that ended at approximately 7 a.m. and remains in critical condition, a source close to Pead's family told Schefter.

Pead, 26, lost control of his vehicle at approximately 2:32 a.m. Saturday morning and drove off the side of Interstate 670, the Columbus Division of Police told NBC4.

Pead's car went through a guardrail and down an embankment, striking several trees along the way, according to NBC4. Pead was ejected from the vehicle while a passenger, Wesley Richardson, 27, was in stable condition, according to NBC4.

Pead appeared in three games this season for the Miami Dolphins, and he had recently worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent his first four years in the NFL with the Rams from 2012 to 2015.

A Columbus native, Pead was a second-round draft pick of the Rams in 2012 after starring at the University of Cincinnati.

A message posted Saturday morning on Cincinnati football's Twitter account said that the program's "thoughts & prayers are with former #Bearcats RB @iPead."
