Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. sued by 3 of his sons for $105M

Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. is being sued by three of his sons for more than $100 million.

The lawsuit was filed last week in a court in Oakland County, Michigan, where Karmanos lives.

The sons say their father did not repay a loan he took out in 2013 from a limited partnership he created with them.

The lawsuit states a son sent Karmanos a notice of default on April 21, demanding a $4.3 million payment on the loan within 30 days or else the entire balance of $105 million would be due immediately.

The lawsuit says no payment was made.

Peter Alter and Ethan Holtz, the Michigan-based attorneys representing the sons, did not respond to requests for comment. Hurricanes spokesman Mike Sundheim declined comment.

Despite the lawsuit, and that Karmanos is looking sell the team, he remains committed to keeping the Hurricanes in Raleigh and playing in PNC Arena, according to the arena's landlord.

"Mr. Karmanos has personally assured me within the last six or eight weeks that he fully intends (the team) to be here for the long haul, has no intention of moving away," Centennial Authority chairman Tom McCormick told the Charlotte Observer. "He would like to sell the team, that's common knowledge, but I don't think he has any intentions of moving, and the fans shouldn't worry about that."
