Texans going to release QB Brian Hoyer

After signing Brock Osweiler and re-signing Brandon Weeden at the beginning of April, the Houston Texans have told quarterback Brian Hoyer that they will release him, a source told ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Despite a rocky start to 2015, Hoyer had arguably his best regular season with Houston last season. He played in 11 games, with nine starts, going 5-4. He threw for 2,606 yards with 19 touchdowns against seven interceptions.

Hoyer opened and closed the season with disastrous performances against theKansas City Chiefs. In the Texans' season opener, he threw aninterception on his first pass to Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters. Hoyer struggled to recover and was benched for Ryan Mallett in the fourth quarter. It took him four weeks to regain his starting spot.

To conclude the season, Hoyer had four interceptions and a fumble in a 30-0 loss to the Chiefs in an AFC wild-card playoff game.

Hoyer, 30, has played for four teams in seven seasons in the league.

Osweiler was signed away from the Denver Broncos to be the starter. He received a four-year deal worth $72 million, with $37 million guaranteed.

Weeden got a two-year, $4 million deal, a source told ESPN's Tania Ganguli.
