1 dead after car overturns on Zebulon Road

The Highway Patrol said one person was killed Monday night when a car overturned on NC 96.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of Zebulon Road.

Authorities said a 1996 Acura Integra was going north on NC 96 toward Wake Forest when the driver, 19-year-old Christopher Andrew Welker of Wendell, ran off the right side of the roadway, over corrected and crossed left of center, going off the road again.

His vehicle then hit a ditch, overturned, struck a tree and came to a stop on its roof.

According to authorities, Welker was the only person in the car. He died at the scene.

Officials said Welker was wearing his seat belt, and speed was a contributing factor in the collision.
