RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Interstate 40 was closed in both directions for several hours Wednesday morning as police responded to a person on the Rock Quarry Road overpass bridge.
Authorities closed the roadway near the bridge at exit 300 for Rock Quarry Road just before 6 a.m.
At the time, Raleigh police would only say that "personnel are dealing with a matter at the interchange of I-40 and Rock Quarry Road."
The incident apparently had to do with a man on the bridge. Authorities later said he was physically unharmed, but was taken to the hospital for medical assessment.
Traffic was backed up for miles as the morning rush hit, but a detour was set up.
Drivers along westbound I-40 were diverted at exit 301, while drivers going east were forced to take exit 298.
