RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Authorities in Raleigh are investigating an attempted armed robbery that was reported on North Carolina State's campus just after midnight Tuesday.

According to NC State police, the victim was held up in the Governors' Scott Courtyard, behind Kilgore Hall on north campus.

Police said the suspect had a gun and demanded the victim's phone. The victim was not injured.

NC State Police told ABC11 that the victim was a female student and she refused to turn over her cell phone to the suspect.

Campus police and officers with the Raleigh Police Department are searching for the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the NC State Campus Police Department at (919)515-3000.

The university also issued a Wolf Alert early Tuesday morning to students, faculty and staff about the incident.

"I like that they give us emails, but I wasn't really concerned about it," NC State student Shannon Koss said. "It's a public university and everybody can walk on and off so I wasn't that concerned. I don't feel unsafe. I mean it's downtown so there's a lot of people here anyways. I feel like I give everybody the benefit of the doubt."

Police have offered safety tips for anyone on or near campus:

  • Assailants are more likely to target individuals walking alone, on darkened or unlit paths, or who are distracted by headphones or activities such as texting.
  • Walk in groups whenever possible, especially at night.
  • Safety Escort Services and public transportation are available as alternatives to walking. Individuals can contact Safety Escort Services at (919)515-3000.
  • If you feel unsafe in any situation, trust your instinct and contact University Police immediately to report suspicious activities or crimes on campus by calling 911 or (919)515-3000.
