CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- ABC11 proudly awarded scholarships Friday to three students from UNC's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Our congratulations to Cierra Cotton, Pierce Conway, and Jordan Budget (pictured from left to right with ABC11 General Manager Caroline Welch). We can't wait to see what your future holds!

The scholarships are part of an endowment ABC11 established at UNC to honor three beloved members of the Eyewitness News family who were killed in a helicopter crash more than 20 years ago.

On December 7, 1991, Chopper 11 went down returning from a high school football game in Wilmington.

Sports reporter Tony Debo was the only survivor. Photographer Bart Smith, 28; engineer Rick Sherill, 33; and pilot Jim Lane, 48; all died.
