Duke investigates possible academic scandal
Duke University says it is investigating hundreds of students who may have engaged in academic misconduct.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Duke University says it is investigating hundreds of students who may have engaged in academic misconduct.

Because it's an ongoing investigation, campus officials declined to comment any further. However, the probe is making headlines in the campus newspaper.

The Chronicle reports about 400 students, who took a computer science class last spring and this semester, are facing potential disciplinary action, if a review of their coursework reveals irregularities.

Their former professor requested the investigation after suspecting some students received inappropriate help with their course work, including finding answers on the internet.

An email from Duke administrators to the students was published in the student newspaper. It urged the students to come forward and "be sincere."

According to the email, the deadline for their cooperation was on Wednesday.

ABC11 contacted the former professor, Tabitha Peck, who currently works at Davidson College. She deferred all news media inquiries to a Duke University spokesperson.

The website of the Department of Computer Science says students are encouraged to collaborate on some assignments, but they're expected to uphold the Duke Community Standard.

"Students who submit work that is not their own, shortchange not only their own learning but undermine the atmosphere of trust and individual achievement that characterizes Duke's academic community," the website said.
