Moore County School Superintendent Robert Grimesey reinstated at school board meeting
There was an eruption of cheers as the remaining school board members reversed course and voted to reinstate Superintendent Robert Grimesey.

CAMERON, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Moore County School Board Monday Night reinstated fired Superintendent Dr. Robert Grimesey.

More than 1,000 teachers, students, parents, and residents cheered and applauded the decision.

Last Thursday, Grimesey, who had been on the job since last July, was fired in a 5-3 vote by school board members after a performance review. No reason for the firing was given.

The public outcry and community backlash was so intense that, over the weekend, three of the five board members who had voted to fire the superintendent resigned under public pressure.

Teacher Deborah Marley said it was good to have Grimesey back at the helm.

"He is an advocate for the teachers and the students," said Marley.

"He's just a great man whose heart is for the community," said Ken Rahal who lives in Moore County. "His heart is for the students. His heart is for the teachers."

Because of the crowd size, the school board meeting was moved to the auditorium at Union Pines High School in Cameron. The crowd's message was heard.

More than 5,000 residents signed a petition calling for the board to resign. After the vote, many in the crowd said they felt the majority of the remaining board members had made amends.

"I still think one still needs to go," said resident Lisa Evans, "but not all five."

Grimesey had no comment Monday night, and there is no official word on when he will be back in his office at the Moore County Schools office in Carthage.
