FORT BRAGG, NC (WTVD) -- Preparations are underway for Independence Day on Fort Bragg, including new security measures for those attending the fireworks display.

Military officials estimate between 40,000 and 60,000 attendees will be at the Main Post Parade Field, which opens to the public at 3 p.m.

"You can feel it in your chest," said John Edwards, a technician with PyroShows. "It's pretty massive."

Unlike years past, a hurricane barrier fence with six metal gate entrances surround the Main Post Parade Field. A spokesman likens entry to the fireworks to an airport security line, but also said attendees should not be concerned about a specific threat this weekend.

"People should not look at as the barrier going around that there's an active threat going on against here. It's up there strictly as safety," said spokesman Tom McCollum.

"Fort Bragg has a lot of safety measures all throughout the installation and we change them constantly," he continued. "We've got them on the perimeter and we'll have them closer and it's just to ensure everyone has a safe, good time."

McCollum said prohibited items include weapons, any cane other than a walking aide, glass bottles, and cans.

Government-issued identification as well as routine car searches will also be required.

Dozens of entertainment acts, including the Division Rock Band and Chorus, food vendors and kid zones will be on site.
