Raleigh holds free shredding and recycling event

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Just in time for Earth Month and tax day, the City of Raleigh is holding a shredding and electronics recycling event on Saturday, April 9 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Method Community Park, 514 Method Road in Raleigh.

"The most important thing is understanding what documents really need to be shredded," explained Bianca Howard, Environmental Coordinator with the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services. "Understanding that can help you save money. The most important documents to shred are the ones that contain social security numbers, full account numbers, or personal medical information."

Howard said not to worry about shredding mail without that personal information.

"A lot of junk mail can be recycled without being shredded," she continued. "Once you understand what needs to be shredded, this event is a great way to save some money and get those documents destroyed and prevent yourself from possibly becoming a victim of identity theft."

ProShred Security is donating shredding services for this event.

You can also bring computers, TVs, phones, and other electronic devices for recycling. Remember to remove sensitive data from hard drives and phones before recycling

You can bring up to three boxes ("banker box" size) or bags of paper per person. There is a limit on the amount of material per person to ensure that as many residents who wish to participate may do so. The event may end early if the truck fills up.

In addition, Office Max and Office Depot will offer 5 pounds of free shredding in store with this coupon through April 23.
