Save and protect yourself before a move
Summer is big business for moving companies, but that doesn't mean consumers should go with the cheapest or most convenient.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Summer is big business for moving companies like Two Men And A Truck.

"These three months - June, July, and August - we do as many moves these three months as the entire rest of the year," said Tyler Stevens of Two Men And A Truck in Durham.

Therefore, when demand is up and moving deadlines are looming, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest or most convenient movers. However, regulators say there are some things you need to know before hiring movers.

If your move is within the state, it's regulated by the North Carolina Utilities Commission. The commission requires movers to have a certificate issued by them. It also has movers agree to carry insurance and abide by other consumer protection requirements as well as a Maximum Rate Tariff (MRT) for customers. The commission issued the MRT to establish the maximum rates movers may charge their customers for the services they render.

According to the commission, in-state moves of 35 miles or less are billed at hourly rates and 36 miles or more are calculated by weight and distance.

Stevens advises consumers to do their homework before hiring anyone. "If you're using a moving company, you want them to be licensed, bonded, and insured so that you're protected," said Stevens. "I would do your research on companies that you're using."

Research can be done through the North Carolina Utilities Commission and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration which regulates interstate movers and brokers. You can also check out customer reviews on the site movingscam.com

"It definitely helps to be prepared when you're moving," said Stevens.

In addition, when it comes to saving money on your move, regulators say watch out for up front fees before getting your service. Also, make sure your estimates are binding and guaranteed not to exceed a certain amount. Flexibility is also key to your bottom line.

"Usually, Tuesday through Friday are a little less busy," explained Stevens. "The weekends tend to get busy for the movers, so if you are flexible with your move date that will definitely help you out when selecting your company."

Plus, by doing your homework before selecting your company, it just might help make the stress of moving a little easier.
