Wake schools to hold weekend surplus sale
Wake County Public Schools opens its doors to the public several times a year to sell surplus items at steep discounts.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Wake County Public Schools opens its doors to the public several times a year to sell surplus items at steep discounts.

All of the items are moved into a storage area at the Mount Vernon School in Raleigh with a surplus sale planned at the school for Saturday, August 30 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

"It's a little bit of everything," said Senior Administrator and Warehouse Operations Manager for Wake Schools, David O'Neal. "Like I said, it's like a big yard sale. Who knows what you might see."

There are many staple items from schools such as desks and chairs as well as teachers desks and filing cabinets with rock bottom prices.

"Pianos are the biggest thing we normally sell," explained O'Neal. "And those normally go for $20-$25."

"These student desks right here," said Shipping Team Leader, Marty Napier. "These go for $3 a piece. The chairs that go with these desks - they're $2.

Pointing to the wooden toy kitchens and sinks, Napier explained, "This kindergarten stuff always goes pretty quick. It's very well made, but they all have little issues. But, they are $5 per unit."

The sales are held several times a year with items from schools all over Wake County. Most of the inventory comes from schools slated for renovation such as Green Elementary in Raleigh.

All of the money raised goes back into the school system.

"All this money goes back into the Wake County Public Schools general fund," explained O'Neal. "So, it goes back in to be distributed to the schools and like I said there's no telling what you might see."

Next year, there are five schools slated for extensive renovation. So, you can bet these sales will be a good place to snag a deal on Wake County's surplus.

Cash and checks are accepted at the surplus sale and shoppers should come prepared to immediately remove their purchases off site.
