DURHAM (WTVD) -- The manager of the Durham Bulls and a few of his players shaved their heads at the end of Friday night's game in an effort to raise awareness in the fight against children's cancer.

The players teamed up with an elementary school student for the event. Eight-year-old cancer survivor Diego Hernandez was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 6. He had one organ removed and underwent chemotherapy. Diego's cancer is now in remission.

The team is helping the second grader raise money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Funds will go towards research and programs at local cancer hospitals.

"There's kids right now that I know that their mom is waiting for them to take their last breath and that's just wrong," said Diego's mom Addi Hernandez.

She said she feels blessed her boy is doing well now. He threw out the first pitch for the game.

"We're one of the lucky ones that he's still here," said Hernandez. "It's awesome, it really is. We're going through some stuff now with chemo effects, but he's here. He's running around. He looks fine. He's healthy and he's here."
