RALEIGH (WTVD) -- In demonstrations across North Carolina Thursday, health care advocates called for Medicaid expansion.

Various nonprofits banded together in Raleigh for the "Where's the Plan" rally to call on Gov. Pat McCrory to expand Medicaid for parents.

The group held a press conference to release a report from Georgetown University's Center for Children and Families. The report detailed research connecting children's health with the insurance coverage of their parents.

Executive Director of the nonprofit NC Child, Michelle Huges, talked about her group's call to action for McCrory.

"We would like Governor McCrory to go ahead and release his health care insurance expansion to ensure that the 500,000 citizens that do not currently have health care coverage are able to access health insurance and receive the health services that they need to be healthy," Huges explained.

Republicans in the General Assembly are adamant that any expansion of the state's Medicaid rolls must come after an overhaul of the system.

Following a Supreme Court ruling upholding parts of the 2010 health care law, McCrory said he is working with leaders in Washington to get exceptions to the law before expanding Medicaid.
