Fatal stabbing in Fayetteville
Monaca Holt, 40

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVD) -- The Fayetteville Police Department is investigating the fatal stabbing of a man Tuesday morning.

Officers said they were called to the corner home of the victim, Thomas McNair, just before 7:30 a.m. at Ellis Street and Turnpike Road in Savoy Heights.

Police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Monaca Sherece Holt, an acquaintance of McNair. The two were involved in an argument which ended in Holt stabbing McNair, according to authorities.

Holt was charged with second degree murder and was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.

Family and friends stood outside the crime scene tape remembering the popular, kind man.

"He'll truly be missed," the victim's friend Lind Johnson said. "Chills, sadness, because this is a close-knit community."

Family members said McNair was in his late-60's and took in the woman from out-of-state as a house guest to help her out.

"That's going to be a sad thing to the neighborhood," victim's friend Bobby Miller said. "By him taking her in. That was shame," Miller said. "To see her take a man's life away like that from him."

It's unclear when the actual stabbing took place or where McNair's body was found.

"I just can't understand this one. And she stabbed him to death? Lord Have Mercy," the victim's cousin Ella Brown said. "He gave her everything she wanted, you know? And he was a friend to her. I can't understand what's going on."
