High Point University said Wednesday that its latest poll shows the majority of North Carolina residents would rather protect the right to own guns than protect citizens against gun violence.

Fifty seven percent favored protecting the constitutional right of citizens to own guns, while 35 percent though protecting citizens from gun violence was more important.

High Point also said it found large majorities in favor of ways to reduce gun violence, including requiring additional criminal background checks and improving enforcement of existing gun laws.
