Heidi Cruz campaigns for Ted Cruz in Fayetteville.

It was a small but enthusiastic crowd Monday afternoon that gave Ted Cruz's wife a standing ovation at Fayetteville Tech.

Heidi Cruz subbed for her husband, the Republican presidential candidate who was campaigning in Chicago.

But the senator's wife is no second-string backup. The Harvard graduate is described as one of Ted Cruz's closest advisers.

She espoused Ted's message to a crowd made up of many veterans as well as young military families.

Heidi Cruz told the audience that her husband will stand behind veterans and the military.

Also Monday, Ted Cruz picked an endorsement from one of North Carolina's most influential politicians.

Senate leader Phil Berger announced his endorsement Monday, saying Cruz is the only GOP candidate with a "realistic chance" of winning the nomination who can beat the Democratic nominee in November.

Berger had positive things to say about Donald Trump, praising him for putting the spotlight on issues worthy of more discussion and debate and for challenging political correctness. But Berger says polling shows Trump losing by large margins in November.

Berger called Cruz a "principled outsider with a proven track record on fiscal and social issues that conservatives can count on."
