Elderly woman dead after fiery crash in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- An elderly woman was killed in an accident where her SUV slammed into a tree, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon on US-70 just west of Allen Lane. Troopers say she apparently lost control of the SUV.

A witness on the scene said the woman had been driving erratically. She said the SUV caught fire immediately after hitting the tree.

State Highway Patrol is investigating. No other information was immediately available.
