Dust devil halts college softball game

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (WTVD) -- A college softball game in Lynchburg, Virginia was suddenly halted this past weekend when a large dust devil suddenly popped up on the infield.

The Lynchburg College Hornets were taking on the Bridgewater Eagles when the whirlwind caught the players and spectators completely by surprise.

The dust devil disappeared just as suddenly as it arrived.

The whirlwinds form when the ground is warm and the air above is cooler. Rising and sinking air can easily cause the weather phenomenon over dusty or sandy areas.
