FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Police in Fayetteville say a 14-year-old boy was shot in the 700-block of Broadmore Drive Wednesday morning when his 15-year-old brother tried to unload a handgun.

It happened just after 11:30 a.m.

In a 911 call released Thursday, the 14-year-old explained to an operator what happened.

Boy: "I was lying [inaudible] and my brother brought the gun out. He was just trying to ... He was just joking and he shot it.

Dispatcher: "Okay, so you got shot in the ear?"

Boy: "Yes ma'am. I lost a lot of blood, too."

The operator kept the boys calm as emergency officials headed out to the home. The wounded teen was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and then transferred to UNC Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department's Youth Services division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. There has been no word yet on charges.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477).
