Durham police officer escapes injury in serious crash

DURHAM, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Two brothers received a big scare after an SUV plowed into their home after crashing into a police car.

It happened late Sunday night near Lawson and Rosewood streets.

The police officer involved in the wreck was not injured; however, his car was severely damaged.

The home received minor damage, but it was still a surprise for the Jones brothers who were just inches away from where the vehicle hit.

Sam Jones was playing video games when he heard a loud bang against the wall.

"My first reaction was that I just jumped straight up and fell right on the floor," he said. "And I was just trying to figure out what happened."

The 17-year-old was amazed when he looked out of the window and found an SUV smashed into the home. And in the front yard, a Durham police cruiser in ruin.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle was Timothy Brown, Jr.

Officers said Brown drove past a stop sign, striking the police officer's vehicle before barreling toward the teen's home.

Jones' brother, Amadeus, was resting in the living room when the incident occurred. He said the boom sounded like thunder.

"I heard a big thud right here, but I was kind of half sleep," Amadeus explained. "I checked to see if everybody was ok. Then I just went back to sleep."

The suspect was charged with failing to adhere to the stop sign.

A woman in Brown's car was taken to the hospital, suffering from back pain.

The suspect told police his brakes failed which is why he couldn't stop.
