Sanford man dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound, police say.

Sanford Police responded Thursday to a report of a man with a gun in the downtown area.

The incident happened at Charlotte Avenue and First Street. Police found the armed man sitting in front of a business.

Police said they communicated with the 28-year-old man for about 90 minutes before the man used a handgun to shoot himself.

He was taken to Central Carolina Hospital, where he died of the single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
