Press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters about the donation Thursday.

WANT TO HELP? 'Day of Giving' today for those affected by Hurricane Harvey

She did not say who the recipients will be and said the president asked her to get suggestions from the White House press corps, "since you have been doing a lot of reporting into the roots of organizations who are best and most effective" groups to whom to donate, she said.

Trump has been criticized in the past for giving far less of his income to charitable causes than many other multi-billionaires.

Harvey's floodwaters have heavily damaged thousands of homes across Texas and killed at least 30 people. The storm is now threatening the region near the Texas-Louisiana state line.

Trump may visit the Harvey-ravaged Houston area Saturday.

Trump, who visited Texas on Tuesday, is planning a return trip this weekend with first lady Melania Trump. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders says they may visit the Houston area, as well as Lake Charles, Louisiana, though she is stressing the plans are still tentative.

ABC News and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
