Shelter animals evacuated from Puerto Rico land at RDU
RDU (WTVD) -- Eighty-seven dogs and cats were loaded onto a plane from Puerto Rico and flown to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
The Humane Society of the United States has been on the ground in Puerto Rico working to evacuate all shelter animals and placing them in shelters across the country.
Kim Janzen, President and CEO of the SPCA of Wake County said they got the call Wednesday afternoon. She said they were asked if they could take dozens of animals and she said yes.
"We can't wait to find them their forever homes," said Janzen.
The SPCA of Wake County will take 40 of the animals. The rest will go to other rescue groups. The animals were flown on a private plane to RDU on Thursday night, after making a stop in Ft. Lauderdale.
Out of all the animals traveling, 17 are cats, the rest are dogs. Janzen said all the animals were originally in shelters in Puerto Rico and wanted to stress that these are not lost pets.
Now the shelters in Puerto Rico can concentrate on helping lost pets and strays found after Hurricane Maria.
While they are happy to take in the animals and help, Janzen said their resources will be stretched thin and urges people to donate if they can.
The animals will go through the normal intake process at the shelter and will soon be up for adoption.
