MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- A 6-year-old boy with autism is back with his family after he was found driving a motorized toy car on the Bronx River Parkway over the weekend.

Officers found the boy on the mini ATV just after 7 p.m. Sunday in Mount Vernon.

Investigators say several drivers slowed down to block the child from other traffic.

One man then carried the boy to the side of the road.

Police say the child got away from a teenager who was watching him at a park.

Relatives immediately notified police.

Westchester County police began receiving 911 calls less than an hour later about a boy riding an ATV on the parkway.

Police say he drove to Oak Street from the park near South Seventh Avenue and then took the ramp onto the northbound parkway.

He was taken to a hospital for observation and found to be OK.
