Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina sent an email to employees saying they were increasing security and safety measures at their facilities due to incidents involving "extremely frustrated customers."

An insider leaked the email to the ABC11 I-Team on Friday.

The email sent to all employees stated the Durham, Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, and Charlotte police departments would be providing extra security at their buildings.

A so-called "system failure" at BCBSNC enrolled thousands of customers in the wrong health insurance. Customers across the state complained of long wait times with customer service representatives and problems with their bills.

"We are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution," the health insurance company wrote. "We'll continue to assess our security needs and make any changes as circumstances warrant."

BCBSNC employees:

Because of a couple of incidents involving extremely frustrated customers, we are increasing security and safety measures at our facilities.

We have asked the Durham, Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville and Charlotte police departments to provide extra patrols at our buildings. We have also asked for off duty police officers in uniform to be present at Headquarters, Building 100 and Winston-Salem. Our security vendor, Allied Barton, will also be increasing its presence onsite.

We are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution. We'll continue to assess our security needs and make any changes as circumstances warrant.

There are a couple of things you can do to help. Please wear your employee badge at all times and be careful not to let people without badges into non-public areas of our company.
